CHS makes list of top schools for low income students

Cheney High School was voted as one of the top high schools for low-income students, ranking 299 out of 500 in Newsweek’s “Beating the Odds” list. The list features schools in the United States that prepare students for college while overcoming challenges posed by economic disadvantage. Cheney was the only school from Eastern Washington to make the list.

Cheney community coat drive

It is that time of year again, time to collect and distribute coats for the Cheney community. New or used coats for all ages can be donated beginning this week at area schools, churches and several businesses.

Big Wash and local volunteers will make sure all coats are clean and ready for distribution in October.

Distribution is set for Oct. 14, at Sunset Elementary School, Oct. 15 at Salnave Elementary School and Oct. 31 at Feed Cheney.

MLHS Booster Club fundraiser

The Medical Lake High School Booster Club is celebrating its 10th Annual Grapes and Hops Live and Silent Auction, Oct. 29, from 6-10 p.m. at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 708 E. Lake St. Tickets for the event are on sale for $25 from booster club members or at the high school concession stands.

Must be age 21 and older to attend. All proceeds go to support Medical Lake High School students.

Diversity In-/Exclusion Week

Faculty and students of Eastern Washington University invite residents to a week of events on Diversity, In-/Exclusion and the Vote in America: History, Activism and Awareness.

● Oct. 10-13: Student-led voter registration drive at various venues on campus.

● Teach-in, Oct. 10, noon-1:30 p.m., Tawanka Room 215 B-C: “Law, Legacy and History of Voting Rights in U.S. Politics,” with Patty Chantrill, Elizabeth Kissling, Jessica Willis and Robert Bartlett.

● Teach-in, Oct. 11, noon-1:30 p.m., Tawanka Room 215 B-C: “Perspectives on Voting Rights: Latinos, African Americans and LGBTQ+ in U.S. Elections,” with Robert Dean, Nydia Martinez, Okera Nsombi and Nick Franco.

● Candidate Forum, Oct. 12, noon-2:30 p.m., Showalter Auditorium: “In-/Exclusion and the Vote in America Today,” with Washington state candidates for Federal and State offices. Reception will follow.

● Distinguished Lecture in History by Dr. Erik Loomis, Oct. 13, noon-2 p.m., Hargreaves Room 201: “Out of Sight: The Corporate Outsourcing of Catastrophe.”
