Blackhawks football loses at home to Post Falls

It was another tough night at Tom Oswald Field for the Cheney High football team, who lost to 4A Inland Empire League's Post Falls, 21-0, Sept. 16.

The Blackhawks' defense managed to keep the Trojans at bay for most of the first quarter, until Nate Beur's 49-yard scoring pass to Michael Mills, followed by a successful PAT to make the score 7-0.

Braedan Vaughn's 1-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter put Post Falls up 13-0 heading into halftime. Head coach Bobby Byrd said the Trojans were one of the better teams his squad will face this season.

"They were big and physical and we knew (coming into the game) they were a high power offense." Byrd said. "We just weren't successful."

Post Falls capped its scoring in the third quarter on Beur's 20-yard scoring pass to Quin Bennett.

"You saw the difference between a 4A and a 2A school," Byrd said. "Not so much in terms of talent, but they were a tuned and platoon football team and we've got our core group of guys, but they got stretched thin."

Quarterback Cole Hinrichs was seven for 26 with 55 yards and one interception. Logan Kendall had four receptions for 46 yards. Chris Fuentes led the Blackhawks running game with 12 carries for 28 yards.

The Blackhawks (1-2) wrap up nonleague play on Sept. 23 in Yakima against Columbia Basin Big Nine League's Eisenhower (2-1). The Cadets are coming off a 27-13 win over Mercer Island.

Like Post Falls and Sunnyside, Byrd said Eisenhower is a "physical team" that will give Cheney a good challenge, particularly in speed. He noted that the game will be a good opportunity for the team to play a varsity game three hours from home.

"A lot of people comment on how tough our pre-conference schedule is, but through these challenges, we'll be a better team in the long run," Byrd said.

Byrd said this week his team will concentrate on "getting back to basics and focusing on the little things," a mantra that in the past has helped lead the Blackhawks to success.

"I know it sounds cliché, but week in and week out, we just need to get better," Byrd said.
