The Eastern Washington University Gallery of Art will host Jeff Huston’s “Deconstructed Self,” an exhibition that runs from Sept. 29 through Oct. 27. An opening reception will be held Sept. 28 at noon in the gallery.
Huston was born at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam in 1982. Growing up, his family moved consistently until they came to Fairchild Air Force Base. At the age of 11, Huston’s father was killed in a plane crash while serving on active duty. This event shaped questions about masculinity and culture that are central to his artwork.
Huston earned a bachelor of arts in sculpture and drawing from Azusa Pacific University in 2005 and his master of fine arts from Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2015. He spent his first 10 years after college working in Spokane as a video editor at North by Northwest, A Digital Studio. This year, he accepted a job teaching media arts at Bakersfield College in central California where he currently lives with his wife and 2-year-old son. In his studio practice, Huston asks questions about faith and physicality in western white masculine identity using video, sculpture, performance and installation.
The EWU Gallery of Art is located in the Art Building situated in the center of the Fine and Performing Arts complex on the Cheney campus. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. -5 p.m.
