Sept. 21, 2006

Cheney High School’s cross country team took a surprising second place at the 20-team competition at the Highlander Invitational at Shadle Park High School. Daniel Issa, Arick Zachman and Reese Martin not only led the sophomore scoring but also paced the Hawks’ boys altogether, notching the top three times among the varsity seven.

A second Conoco gas station opened up in Cheney on 103 First St. with the other location also on First Street, in the Safeway Plaza.

Sept. 26, 1996

Jesse Mertens, a 6-year-old from Cheney, won the Giant Pumpkin and Sunflower Contest with an entry weighing in at 109 pounds.

Students at Cheney Middle School participated in the fund run to raise money for a variety of school activities. The students had been collecting pledges, which eventually climbed to a total of more than $20,000.

The Eastern Washington Eagles started off the football season 2-1, before hosting Portland State University in an upcoming Big Sky Conference game.

Sept. 18, 1986

A grant of $30,000 toward the construction of a new building for the Cheney Library was received from the Comstock Foundation of Spokane.

The Senior Nutrition and Affairs Committee (SNAC) had been working closely with Spokane Transit Authority (STA) officials Allen Schweim, executive director, and Emilio Zamora, director of special transportation, to place a van and driver for service in the Cheney area.

Sept. 23, 1976

Cheney Fire Chief Tony Singleton was asked to resign by the mayor. Singleton had submitted his resignation earlier this month allegedly for the purpose of continuing his education, but reports received this past week suggested that Mayor Gerald Blakely suggested the move.

Paul Geary, a 16-year-old senior at Cheney High School, was named a semifinalist in the 1977 National Merit Scholarship, which had over 1 million student entries.

Cheney High School’s Future Farmers of America won numerous awards at the Spokane Interstate Fair.

Sept. 22, 1966

The Cheney Blackhawks rolled to their third straight victory by defeating East Valley 38-32. For Cheney, Tom Oswald completed 7 of 9 passes for two touchdowns. Tim Shepard ran for 157 yards and Phil Conrath caught five passes.

The retirement of Clarence Brown meant adding another full-time officer to the Cheney Police Department. There are now four full-time officers: Jerry Hudson, Tom Edwards, Kenneth Davie and Chief Wayne Fifield.

Recently elected senior class officers at Medical Lake High School are: Jim Bauman, president; Jack Borenstine, vice president; Carol Maas, secretary and Carol Borden, treasurer.
