State Route 904 was hailed as one of the most successful traffic safety projects in state history. The $350,000 project resulted in a 36 percent reduction in alcohol-related collisions, 70 percent reduction in fatal and disabling collisions, 24 percent reduction in total injuries and 21 percent reduction in all collisions.
Cheney went international when a new business, First Street International Market, opened near Mitchell’s Harvest Foods.
The Sterling Moorman House in Cheney was tentatively scheduled to move to its new location at the corner of Second and G streets. A detailed renovation process began to transform the historic home into a local museum.

Julie Brown, a senior at Cheney High School, was among the many Future Farmers of America and 4-H members who were showing off their animals at the Spokane Interstate Fair.
Eastern Washington University’s Center for Farm Health and Safety will bring its farm stress management workshops to communities throughout Eastern Washington.
The American Red Cross Inland Northwest Chapter was the recipient of a $5,000 donation from the partnership of the Kalispel Tribe of Indians and Carnival Hotels and Casinos Company. The gift was earmarked to help defray disaster relief costs incurred during the fire that had recently ravaged the Airway Heights area.

Mayor George Ramsey announced that the city of Medical Lake had received a grant award for the west shore bike path. This grant totals $74,000 and the city received it through the Aquatic Land Enhancement Account.
The Robert Reid Lab School opened with a new principal and a new affiliation, as a regular school in the Cheney School District.
Former Cheney High School star Laurie Hattemer, who had been playing volleyball at the University of Oregon, and junior college transfers Nadin Burrous and Lisa Rock, joined the Eastern Washington University women’s basketball program.

Work at the site of the new Cheney Junior High School at North Sixth Street and Betz Road picked up as workers tried to take advantage of the late summer weather to keep the construction of the new educational facility on schedule.
Dr. Emerson Shuck, former president of Eastern Washington State College and a former instructor at the college, was named by Gov. Dan Evans to be co-chairman of Washington’s United Nations Day.
Cheney Blackhawk football practice got underway with 60 high schoolers trying out for spots on the varsity roster. The Blackhawks first game would be against Othello.

Al and Marie Isaaken, owners of Cheney’s new catalog store and dealers to sell Sears merchandise, were planning a grand opening.
The Howard Marsh family awoke Tuesday morning to find the results of a small cyclone that passed through their yard. Large branches were twisted off elm trees and a henhouse was lifted up and set down four feet off its foundation.
