1. Two big priorities that I have been leading on for Eastern Washington are substantive Veterans Affairs reform and better forest management. I have introduced two pieces of legislation to address these issues: the Faster Care for Veterans Act which requires the VA to utilize off the shelf technology to schedule appointments like is used in doctor's offices across the country. This legislation empowers veterans while giving VA employees more tools to do their jobs effectively and efficiently. The Resilient Federal Forests Act (HR 2647), would improve the way our forests are managed and help prevent wildfires.
2. I have a responsibility to lead by example in order to get results for the people of Eastern Washington. I look for opportunities to work across the aisle whether it be veterans and military families, forest management, 21st Century cures, or disabilities.
3. Two major barriers facing economic development in our district are overregulation and transportation infrastructure. We continue to see unelected bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. push top down regulations for everything from mud puddles to pizza toppings. These regulations do not match the situational reality of our small business owners, farmers and everyday citizens. I have fought against overreaching regulations like the Waters of the USA Act, and will continue to fight any future regulations that are not approved with a vote of the people's representatives.
4. Congress plays a significant role in addressing social issues by providing people a temporary safety net and the tools they need for a better life. For example, in 2015 Congress passed the ABLE Act (HR 647), which provided individuals with disabilities – through tax-free savings accounts – a way to save for education, transportation, housing and to live more independently. It will empower millions – like my son, Cole – with the opportunity live independently and have more opportunities.
