At its June 22 meeting, the Cheney School Board went through some items to prepare for next year, which included adopting the school district's budget for the 2016-17 school year.
Kassidy Probert, the district's director of finance, said the expenditure levels for the general fund will be over $52.27 million while revenues are expected to come in at over $52.33 million for a surplus of $56,508 at the end of the year. The excess will be added to the beginning fund balance, currently at over $3.79 million, for an estimated total of over $3.84 million.
Expenses for the transportation vehicle fund will be $870,000 while the capital projects fund will be over $1.6 million. The debt service fund will be $6.6 million and the ASB fund will be $380,218.
The district also introduced the new assistant principals at the following elementary schools: Sara McKennon, Salnave Elementary School; Alison Tobler, Betz Elementary School and Catheleen Schlotter, Snowdon Elementary School. Laura Roehl will be the assistant principal at both Sunset and Windsor elementary schools.
In other action items, the board approved a contract renewal with Food Services of America for prime vendor food services, which included bakery and produce. The district entered into a contract with Food Services of America in 2014.
"I can say that for the 2015-16 school year, things went really well when working with this vendor," Jerald Klinkenberg, nutrition services director, said.
The board also approved a contract renewal with Terry's Dairy for dairy services to the district.
During public comment, several residents spoke of their concerns regarding the Washington state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction adding concepts like self-identity, gender expression and roles to its curriculum guidelines for the K-12 Health and Physical Education Learning Standards. They asked the district to not add these concepts to its 2017-18 curriculum.
"Our administration is working to handle this issue," School Board President Henry Browne answered, when a resident asked if the district is planning to integrate the concepts into its curriculum.
In other business:
• The board had the first reading of the following revised school board policies: "Electronic Resources and Internet Safety," "Transitional Bilingual Instruction Program," "Alternative Learning Experience Courses" and "Nutrition and Physical Fitness."
