For families with children attending Windsor Elementary School that are looking for some extra books to read over summer break, the school is conducting its annual summer library.
Students and their parents can go to Windsor and check out books from the library every Tuesday from 5:30–6:30 p.m. until Aug. 9.
Windsor Principal Vincent Songaylo said the school has been having its summer library for at least 15 years. He said staff will be on hand to help students look for and pick out books.
“We don’t really have a library in our area,” Songaylo said.
Windsor is located outside of Cheney city limits near the Fairways Golf Course, and several miles away from libraries on the West Plains.
“This is an opportunity for children and their parents to check out books,” Songaylo said. “Parents will also visit with each other during the library. It’s another thing that brings the community together.”
Songaylo added he does encourage parents and children to “visit the other libraries in Cheney, Airway Heights, Medical Lake and downtown Spokane.”
Songaylo said the primary reason for the summer library is to give students access to books.
He explained that children who do not read during the summer will regress in their reading progress when they return to school in the fall.
“This is all about getting books in kids’ hands,” Songaylo added.
Windsor’s summer library also partners with Spokane County Library District to bring activities to the library once a month. Gwendolyn Haley, library services manager for the district, said the activities related to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and other educational fields.
“We’ll have kids do hands-on activities like Legos with different building challenges or make marble roller coaster challenge, which is really popular,” Haley said.
Haley said partnering with Windsor for the summer library allows the district to serve its patrons outside of its buildings.
Songaylo said the library is accessible to current Windsor students, as well as families who move to the district during the summer. He added that Westwood Middle School students, who previously attended Windsor, can come and check out books as well.
