Rising oil prices put a halt to road paving projects in Cheney after an $821,000 grant fell some $200,000 short in completing work on Elm, Washington, Salnave and Presley streets, among other arterials.

The property owner of 13 acres in the area of State Route 904 and Mullinex Road was denied a zoning change that would take industrial property and turn it into residential land.

T.J. Gover, who had just finished his freshman year at Medical Lake High School, tossed a 4-0 no-hitter against East Valley in American Legion AA baseball.

Ignoring the recommendations of the city’s Planning Commission, the Cheney City Council voted to accept different areas in and around SR-904 and north of Betz Road as part of its interim urban growth area.

After declaring that Eastern Washington University would strive to bring more traditional students to live on campus, school officials announced they would close Pearce Hall for the 1996-97 school year due to lack of students living on campus.

Wilcox Farms announced plans to build a creamery that could employ up to 20 people in a project on the west end of Cheney.

June 19, 1986

At a general meeting of the Friends of the Library, the Tillicum Club pledged support to the planned new Cheney library. Mayor Fred Johns spoke about the planned city vote to raise additional funds.

Ron Grimm, president of the Cheney Rodeo Association, announced that for the first time in history the rodeo would be expanded to three days.

June 17, 1976

Timely information, community cooperation and good police work helped Cheney Police break up a juvenile theft ring involving 18 boys, ages 13–17. Officers recovered $2,000 and expected to locate another $1,500 – $2,000 in property.

Medical Lake City Planner, Tom Groce, reported the results of a residents’ survey on various city services hoping to formulate policies on clean water, and recruiting physicians to the area.

Cheney Track Club members did well in regional meets where 13-year-old Louis Murphy won his bracket in the 25-meter run while Dave Haugen was runner-up in the 30-39 age division.
