Eastern selects Bowman as new dean of CSTEM

Eastern Washington University announced that Dr. David Bowman has been named the new dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (CSTEM). His appointment will begin Aug. 1.

Bowman is currently the interim dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and professor of geophysics at California State University—Fullerton. He previously spent six years as the chairman of the Department of Geological Services at Cal State Fullerton.

“I’m thrilled to be joining an institution that feels confident in its future,” Bowman said in a May 24 news release. “I’m especially happy to be part of a college that brings together the sciences and engineering in one unit. The ‘real world’ doesn’t see the boundaries between science, math and engineering, so it’s very compelling to be coming to a university that recognizes this reality.”

Under his guidance at Fullerton, the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics program grew into one of the largest geology departments in the state of California, serving 160 students pursuing graduate and undergraduate degrees. While both a faculty member and interim dean at Cal State, Bowman has been involved in governance at all levels with the university. He also presided over the significant expansion of fundraising efforts within his college.

Bowman earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate in geology at the University of Southern California. He replaces Mary Anne Keogh Hoss, who has been serving as interim Provost as well as interim dean of CSTEM since October.
