Calvert sweeps singles bracket, wins Great Northern MVP honors
After a second-place finish in the Great Northern League standings, the Cheney High girls' tennis team captured the District 7 tennis championship at the district tournament at Washington State University, May 21.
Bridget Calvert earned her first district title after she won the singles bracket. Calvert, who was also named MVP of the league, will advance to the 2A state tennis tournament at the University of Washington, May 27-28.
Calvert's teammates Emily Howard and Alannah Lewis finished third and fourth, respectively, in the singles bracket.
After a first-round bye, Calvert defeated Clarkston's Ally Brown in the quarterfinals and Howard in the semifinals with identical 6-1, 6-0 scores. She defeated West Valley's Ava Raney (6-3, 6-3) to win the singles bracket.
Howard picked up wins over East Valley players Kate Pointer (6-4, 6-2) and Eleanor Gorkovchenko (6-1, 6-2) before her loss to Calvert. She defeated Lewis (6-4, 6-0) then lost to Raney (no score available) in the second-place match.
Before her match with Howard, Lewis shut out Clarkston's Victoria Fox (6-0, 6-0) defeated Pullman's Allie Rembert (7-6, 6-2), then lost to Raney (6-1, 7-5) in the semifinals.
All three of Cheney's doubles teams, Taylor Gould and Danica Gary, Sadie Knutson and Shayla Payne and Amparo Contreras and Caitlyn Strong, were eliminated in the first round of the doubles bracket.
