Gardeners of Cheney plant sale Saturday May 21

The Gardeners of Cheney are hosting their annual spring plant sale Saturday, May 21, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Mitchell’s Harvest Foods. A raffle basket, garden art, vegetables, flowers and containers of shrubs and plants will be available along with free plant starts for children.

Proceeds will be used to fund local scholarships.

Cheney book club meets May 25

“Funny in Farsi: A Memoir of Growing Up an Iranian in America” is the May selection of the Book Discussion Group of the Friends of the Cheney Community Library. The group meets Wednesday, May 25, at 7 p.m. at the library.

In her account, author Firoozeh Dumas describes her immigrant family’s life before and after the Iranian Revolution of 1979. As a child, she learned English easily and acted as a translator for her mother.

Dumas writes of the importance of family in the Iranian culture and of the surprises, pleasant and unpleasant, her family encountered in American life.

Cheney Memorial Day breakfast and program May 30

The Cheney Cemetery Association will be having a breakfast at the American Legion Hall, 116 College Ave., Monday, May 30 from 8 – 10:30 a.m. as part of its Memorial Day observance. Breakfast is $6 for adults, $4 for children under 6, with all proceeds going towards the upkeep of Cheney cemeteries.

Following the breakfast, the public is invited to walk (or drive) down Salnave Road to the annual Memorial Day ceremony at Fairview Cemetery. The service begins at 11:15 a.m., and includes participation by local Cub Scouts, the Eastern Washington University ROTC color guard, VFW rifle squad and Cheney High musicians along with community members.

Veterans cemetery Memorial Day

The public is invited to a Memorial Day ceremony Monday, May 30, at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery. The program takes place from 11 a.m. – noon, with a musical prelude beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The Washington State Veterans Cemetery is located west of Medical Lake on Espanola Road.

Tyler Daze taking place June 4

Come out and enjoy the annual celebration of “Tyler Daze Community Firemen’s Breakfast and Flea Market,” Saturday, June 4, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Flea market inside tables or outside spaces can be reserved now for $15. Bring your garage, yard, barn, household items, arts and crafts, antiques or collectibles. There will be free coffee, advertising and entertainment.

Breakfast is served beginning at 7 a.m., lunch is from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Donations accepted.

ML Cemetery Memorial Day observance

The Medical Lake Cemetery Association invites the community to a Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 30, at 9:30 am. The cemetery is located at 21419 West Thorpe Road — take a left on Thorpe as you are coming north on Brooks Road. Please contact Janice Radmer, president, at 299-5269 for more information.

WSRPE ML chapter meeting May 25

Washington State Retired Public Employees Chapter 14 in Medical Lake will meet on May 25 at City Hall.

A potluck lunch begins at noon. This month the speaker will be Maria Britton-Sipe, executive director of the state RPEC.
