There was concern in Medical Lake following the recent closure of four businesses, including, Inch by Inch Women’s store, Pizza Factory, the Wooden Spoon Café and the Medical Lake Emporium.

The deadline to move the historic Sterling-Moorman House, or see it face possible demolition, was fast approaching. Funding to move the home was still lagging.

Cheney High School alum Steve Emtman was one of 15 former players and coaches selected for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2007. Emtman graduated in 1988 from CHS and went on to attend the University of Washington where in 1991 he won both the Lombardi and Outland trophies prior to being drafted by the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts.

The Circle Seven convenience store at First and Elm streets was robbed by an armed man who left with $300 and was still at large.

The Cheney City Council passed an ordinance that will halt the installation of large billboard signs in the future. The maximum allowable size of future signs is 64 square feet.

Cheney’s Jo Pierce earned her third consecutive trip to the 2A state tennis tournament following a 6-4, 6-1 win over her opponent from Riverside.

Declaring it was time for a change for him, and Eastern Washington University, President H. George Frederickson announced he will resign his position effective in August 1987 to accept a professorship at the University of Kansas.

Soon to retire 6th District Sen. Sam Guess said in a recent visit to Cheney that the city had been his favorite constituency to represent during his 24-year legislative career in Olympia.

Medical Lake defeated Inchelium 17-2 to advance to the state 1A softball tournament as the Northeast A League’s No. 3 seed. Kelli McInnis was 3 for 3 and Mary Giannandrea had a two-run home run.

Admonishing Eastern Washington State College for not bringing a suit when it first learned that a fraternity planned to show two alleged “hardcore” pornographic movies, a Superior Court judge ruled that the films must be viewed by a judge to determine whether they are obscene.

A drive to collect $250,000 had begun to fund construction of a new and improved Cheney Care Center, spokesman Don Largent said.

May 25, 1966

Three West Plains students won awards at the EWSC all-sports banquet staged at the college. Gary Glasgow of Medical Lake was named the most valuable player on the baseball team. Cheney’s Dave Harris won an award as captain of the wrestling team and Pete Sternitzky, of Cheney, and a member of the tennis team was selected most inspirational.
