Cheney golf teams gear up for districts

The Cheney High boys’ and girls’ golf teams wrapped up their regular season at the May 5 Great Northern League tournament in Pullman. The girls took third with 122 points while the boys finished fourth with 498.

Team scores in the girls’ tournament were calculated via the modified Stableford Scoring system where the highest total of points wins instead of the lowest.

Cheyanne Marchand hit a 54 to lead her team and tie with Pullman’s Julia Lupkes for third place.

On the boys’ side, Tyler Koohns finished fourth after shooting an 81. Thomas Baycroft hit an 89 and John Mulcahy shot a season-best of 101. Other top finishers for Cheney included Ian Hill (111), Cam Hardt (116) and Logan Klauss (119).

Both teams will compete in the first round of GNL districts at the Meadowwood Golf Course in Liberty Lake, today (May 12) and then in the second round, May 16.

Head coach Jeff Pike confirmed the following boys will represent Cheney in districts: Koohns, Klauss, Hill, Baycroft, Hardt and Scott Nadeau.

“I think most of our players have the ability to make it to the second day of districts if they play well,” Pike said. “I’m expecting Tyler and Thomas to move on to the second day if they play as they have all year.”
