Turf company warehouse project is underway

A building project for a West Plains business that had been anticipated to be completed by now has just recently broken ground.

Coast-To-Coast Turf, a national company that installs artificial turf and is located along Interstate 90 at Thomas Mallen Road, is erecting a structure that will be used for both storage and a place where their products can be displayed and demonstrated.

"We had planned on building last fall but we had to go through some hurdles with plans and permits," owner Steve Webb said of the 8,000 square-foot pole building.

Webb said the structure, plus landscaping, will cost about $250,000. It is anticipated to be in use by the middle of June.

"We will store all our used turf and new turf," he said. "We custom cut our turf for a lot of customers so we will have the space to roll out and cut."

During the winter, part of the building will be used to showcase some of the company's specialty items such as pitching mounds, batters boxes and catchers boxes inserts for baseball and softball fields.

"We will also store our landscape turf, which we will start focusing on more," Webb said. More and more people are looking at artificial turf for their home and business uses, he added.

But athletic fields will continue to be the top priority for the company that took shape about four years ago.

Among their notable installations in the past are at Seattle Memorial Stadium in the Seattle Center, fields at the University of Portland and the Kalispel Indian Reservation for a Pow Wow stadium.

Summer projects for Coast-To-Coast include contracts for Kasch Park in Everett, Wash., and Sozo Sports Complex at Brigham Young University in Rexberg, Idaho.

"We have room for one more project this summer and then will get ready for fall work and next years business," Webb said.

Artificial turf celebrates its 50th birthday this year with the first installation at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas, coining the term AstroTurf. Now there are many turf companies across the nation, most all located in Georgia.
