Ed Resen has been gardening for a long time.
At least since the late 1960s, which is when he and his wife moved into their Cheney house at 927 Oakland St. As Resen began his hobby, he kept collecting spare tulip bulbs, which he immediately planted - year after year after year.
Resen's neighbor across the street to the west, Crystal McNeill, said he once told her he estimates there are now probably 5,000 tulips that bloom in beds in front along Oakland, along the side of the garage and in two large beds on either side of the backyard.
"Feel's more like 10 (thousand)," Resen said.
Those splashes of red, yellow and purple colors every spring are just a couple reasons why Resen's home is the Cheney Garden Club/Kiwanis Club's selection for Yard of the Month for May. Another reason is McNeill swims weekly with garden club member Betty Ray and urged her to take a look at the Oakland Street home.
"I said, 'you should do Ed,'" McNeill said. "He has an amazing garden, loves to garden and is a great neighbor."
Resen, who used to work at Eastern Washington University's physical plant, said he grows three different kinds of tulips. He has lots of bulbs that he keeps planting, generally 1 – 2 inches apart and always in rows.
As a Yard of the Month winner, Resen receives a $25 gift certificate from Jarms Ace Hardware in Cheney. To nominate someone for Yard of the Month, call Ray at (509) 944-1741.
