The Cheney Farmers Market opens at the Marketplace Bakery and Restaurant, Tuesday, May 3 amidst the excitement of having a new location with the exposure of plenty of vehicle traffic and the biggest perk - parking.
"Because of the parking we can be open longer," Farmers Market manager Jeanie Wolen said. When the market was located in the City Hall parking lot the hours were limited because of few places for customers to park.
One of the advantages of the added parking is it provides vendors the opportunity to bring in plants, Wolen said. "If we wait to the middle of June, it's really too late," she added.
The biggest concern with opening in May is the weather, Wolen said. But the forecast appears favorable.
Being open prior to Mother's Day will provide both vendors and customers with opportunities. There will be early produce, such as asparagus, available, as well as plants and hanging baskets, Wolen said.
A popular new addition will be booths staffed by the Master Gardeners and the Cheney Garden Club who will answer questions with local advice and information. "They haven't been associated with us before," Wolen said.
The market will be open Tuesdays through October from 2 – 6 p.m.
