Eagles clinch spot in Big Sky tennis championships

On the heels of a convincing 5-2 road victory over Montana , April 17, the Eastern Washington University women’s tennis team is headed to the Big Sky Conference Championship tournament for the first time since 2009.

The Eagles finished their dual match season with a 6-5 mark in Big Sky play and a 12-10 overall record. Eastern will be the No. 6 seed at this year’s conference tournament, which begins on Friday, April 29, at the Gold River Racquet Club in Gold River, Calif.

Eastern got itself going early, earning the first win of the match in doubles, as the team of juniors Katrina Domingo and Dani Young had a 6-1 win in No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Janaya Smith and freshman Faye Worrall won the important doubles point with a 6-4 win in the No. 1 spot.

Eastern took wins in singles as Smith and Worrall did additional duty. Smith won 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 1 while Worrall rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 3. Moria Hedberg collected a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win in No. 2 singles. Carolina Lopez scored a straight-sets win at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
