Cheney girls start Great Northern League tennis play at 2-0

The Cheney High girls’ tennis team is off to a good start in Great Northern League play after they swept East Valley 7-0, April 12, and defeated Clarkston, 5-2, April 18 — a match that was rescheduled from April 14 due to weather conditions.

In singles, Bridget Calvert, No. 1, came back from a one-set deficit to defeat Ella Gokouchenko (4-6, 6-2, 6-0) and Emily Howard, No. 2, won her match against Macy Pachall (6-4, 6-2).

No. 3 Alannah Lewis defeated Kate Pointer (6-1, 6-3) while No. 4 Caitlyn Strong picked up a win over Kenna Pefley (6-0, 6-2).

In doubles, No. 1 Sadie Knutson and Shayla Payne defeated Jessica Fraser and Maddie Henderson (6-1, 6-0). Amparo Conteras and Danica Gary, No. 2, won their match against Nicole Richardson and Sarah Kroll (6-3, 6-0).

No. 3 Nika Kauwe and Ciarra Gay defeated Brittany Kelly and Samantha Donoguh (6-2, 6-4).

Against Clarkston, Clavert, No. 1, came back from behind to defeat Halle Berg (5-7, 7-3, 6-1). Lewis, No. 3, kept her winning streak alive after she shut out Ally Brown (6-0, 6-0) as did No. 4’s Strong, who defeated Heidi Hansen (6-3, 6-1).

In doubles, Conteras and Gary, No. 2, defeated Riley Dentrum and Behn Latella (6-7, 6-7, 6-4). No. 3 Kauwe and Zeb Potter picked up their first win as a team over Victory Fox and Kaelin Pitney (6-0, 6-4).

Cheney (2-0 GNL, 7-1) is in first place in the league standings. They played second-place Pullman (1-0, 6-2), April 19. The Greyhounds came into the match with a 5-1 win over West Valley, April 14. The Blackhawks will host the Eagles (1-1, 5-1), April 21.
