A new Bi-Mart store received tentative permission from the Cheney Planning Commission to divert a stream known as Minnie Creek to accommodate construction.

The city of Medical Lake, faced with possible future water shortages, was updating its six-year water plan that might include adding more storage capacity.

Medical Lake's 6-0 win over a former top-ranked 2A team Pullman, played under the lights at Bailey Field at Washington State University, helped the Cardinals improve their record to 7-1 overall. Ryan Reitmeier pitched a complete game, throwing a two-hitter.

April 18, 1996

After a chase that resulted in speeds reaching over 100 miles per hour, Cheney police arrested two juvenile males in possession of a stolen Mercury Capri. The chase ended when the car left the road at Salnave and Graham roads.

Eastern Washington University English and humanities professor Dr. Grant Smith's ability to successfully pick winners in political races earned him a guest appearance on the "Late Show with David Letterman."

Cheney's 3-1 soccer victory over Medical Lake, paced by two goals from Ryan Weller, pushed the Blackhawks into contention for first place in the Frontier League.

April 24, 1986

Syrie Hollen, a junior at Cheney High School, was selected as the Inland Empire Dairy princess for 1986 and will represent various milk producers and area events throughout the year.

A maple tree that commemorated the friendship between the U.S. and Canada on the occasion of Expo '86 in Vancouver, B.C. was planted at Pavilion Park in Medical Lake.

EWU was bracing for upcoming cuts in the budget and warned that the school would have fewer faculty and classified staff.

April 22, 1976

The Cheney School Board hired Mark Weibe from Priest River, Idaho as project manager for the new junior high school scheduled to open in time for the 1977 school year.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson spoke at Eastern Washington State College's pavilion to an audience estimated at several hundred people.

50 Years Ago

April 21, 1966

Sylvia Manzo was crowned Miss Cheney for 1966 at a dance at City Hall. Her court included Jackie Gilles, Kathy Deininger and Sue Ham.

EWSC's spring quarter enrollment reached 3,403, according to registrar Donald Manson, up from 3,051 at the same time in 1965.

More than 4,000 students were on the EWSC campus for the school's music festival.
