Bryant makes University of Oregon winter Dean’s List

Medical Lake’s Kristina Bryant was one of 570 students who made Eastern Oregon University’s Dean’s List for the winter term.

Qualifying students achieve and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale while completing a minimum of 12 hours of graded coursework for the duration of the term.

Eastern’s Franco receives national recognition

Nick Franco, Eastern Washington University’s Pride Center manager, was awarded the 2016 Professional Contribution to the Field award from the MultiRacial Knowledge Community (MRKC), an organization under Student Affairs Professionals in Higher Education, one of the largest associations for student affairs professionals in the country.

The MRKC brings multiracial and mixed-heritage issues and related research to the forefront of higher education.

The award for professional contribution recognizes a professional who has made a positive and significant impact on multiracial or transracial adoptee students, faculty and staff through research, on-campus programming, involvement or inclusion.

Franco’s contributions to the field have included multiple research presentations at regional, national and international conferences as well as publications in the Journal of Leadership, Accountability and Ethics and NASPA’s 2016 Knowledge Communities Publication.

Medical Lake Middle School to host chess tournament

The Medical Lake Middle School is hosting a chess tournament, April 23 at noon.

The tournament is free and open to anyone. There will be two brackets: K-12 students and adults.

The finals of each bracket will be played on a life-size chessboard with human chess pieces.

There will be trophy and prizes.

Hui ‘O Hawaii annual luau

EWU’s Hui ‘O Hawaii club will host their annual “Pili Kau, Pili Ho’oilo Luau” April 30 in the Pence Union Building’s multi-purpose room.

Doors open at 5 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 to the first 100 students. General admission is $18, and tickets at the door are $20. Ages six and under are free.

Turnbull beginning bird watching class, May 7

The Friends of Turnbull and Spokane Audubon Society are offering their second beginning bird watching class May 7. The class will be a hands-on chance for adults and children to learn about tools and tips for observing and identifying birds they see on the walk.
