The bats were just not there one day, but were found on another as Medical Lake split a pair of softball games last week.
The Cardinals fell to Chewelah in a Northeast A League game March 31 where they were limited to five hits in a 4-2 loss. The hits were back in an 8-2 win Saturday at Reardan in a nonleague game.
“We fought hard to get back, our bats were stymied a little bit,” head coach Tim Blakely said. “As a team, when you bat below .200 for the game it doesn’t do you very good.”
Taylor Pavao went 2-for-4 for the Cardinals who headed to spring break with a 0-1 NEA record and 4-2 overall.
Against 1B Reardan, and former ML coach John Higgins, who now guides the Indians’ program, Medical Lake got a two-hit performance at the plate from Hailey Hostetter, including a double.
“The first two or three innings we were scoreless,” Blakely said. “We finally put some hits together, got the bases loaded and Hostetter drove in three runs with a double.”
Blakely wanted to single out the efforts of his two pitchers last week. “Bradyn Wegner and Taylor Carpenter, they both threw pretty good,” Blakely said. Carpenter threw a complete game in Chewelah, and Saturday, the two split work, surrendering four hits.
Medical Lake resumes play with a rematch against Chewelah at home, April 12.
