Cardinals close week with pair of soccer wins

Medical Lake soccer went into spring break on a two-game winning streak following victories over Deer Park, 6-2 in a Northeast A League match March 31 at Holliday Field and then Friday, April 1 earning a 3-2 shootout win in a nonleague contest at North Central of the Greater Spokane League.

The week began with a 4-1 loss at home to Newport.

It took a while but the Cardinals, 1-1 in NEA play and 3-4 overall, got goals just two minutes apart from Peter Hansen in the 28th and 30th minutes versus the Stags.

After Deer Park scored in the 36th minute to close it to a 2-1 game, Nick Rosenbeck and Jacob Matt would score at 42 and 51 minutes for a 4-1 lead. Ty Masteller and Austin Geiger finished scoring.

The Cardinals outshot the Stags 20-5 with Sam Matt making two saves.

Saturday, Rosenback scored twice in regulation and then once in the shootout at NC. Hansen and Masteller also scored in the shootout. The GSL hosts outshot Medical Lake 14-9 with Matt making six saves.

Rosenbeck was the lone goal scorer versus Newport (1-1, 4-3), connecting at the 30-minute break the shutout. The Grizzlies had an 11-7 advantage in shots with Matt making four saves.

Medical Lake resumes play Tuesday, April 12 at Lakeside.
