Cheney girls' tennis defeats Shadle Park, Mt. Spokane

With wins over Greater Spokane League’s Shadle Park, 5-2, March 23 and a close victory over Mt. Spokane, 4-3, March 25, the Cheney High girls’ tennis team is off to a hot start.

Allanah Lewis, who moved up to the No. 2 singles spot, defeated Aalayah Lopez (6-2, 6-0). Caitlyn Strong, No. 3 singles, defeated Sophia Votana (6-2, 6-2). Zeb Potter, No. 4 singles defeated Hailey Annis (6-1, 6-0).

In doubles, Amparo Contreras and Nika Kauwe, No. 2 doubles, defeated Selina Shaw and Camile Fiechtner (6-0, 6-7, 6-2). No. 3 doubles Danica Gary and Amanda Foster defeated Lynette Straight and Madi Smith (6-1, 6-3).

“I’m happy with the team’s attitude and camaraderie,” head coach Jason Overland said. “Our leaders are starting to step up and everyone is improving.”

In the Mt. Spokane match, Bridget Calvert, No. 1 singles, picked up her first win of the season after she defeated Rachel Pilgram (6-4, 6-3). Lewis, No. 2 singles, won her match against Katie Grossman (6-1, 6-4).

Amparo Contreras and Danica Gary, No. 3 doubles, defeated Ell Erb and Madi Yahely (6-2, 6-0).

“Our singles lineup is starting to take shape and we’re still trying to find our rhythm with our doubles teams,” Overland said. “We’ve been working on that during practice this week.”

With both teams tied 3-3, Potter, No. 4 singles, capped the match point for Cheney after she defeated Emily Meythaler (6-2, 6-2).

“This is Zeb Potter’s first year playing varsity,” Overland said. “She’s been a big surprise this season and really good for us.”

Cheney (3-1 overall) hosted North Central in a nonleague match, March 30. They play Deer Park at home today (March 31).
