The Cheney High boys’ golf team is in full swing for the 2016 season after they finished 14th out of 17 teams with a score of 428 at the Clarkston Invite, March 14. .
Sophomore Tyler Koohns shot an 86 to lead his team. Other finishers for Cheney include Thomas Baycroft with 98, Logan Klauss, 118 and Ian Hill, 126.
Jeff Pike, who coached the boys’ golf program for 18 years before Bob Hilzendeger took over in 2013, returns to lead the team.
“We have a great group of kids,” Pike said. “We’ve got a young team and we’re kind of starting from scratch.”
The team has four returners including Koohns, who shot an 81 in last year’s state championship, along with Klauss, Hill and Carter Rowe.
During practice, Pike said the team spends 20 minutes on drills and focuses on chipping onto the green.
“We’re spending a lot more time on the greens instead of just driving,” Pike said. “The kids always want to show you how hard they can hit.”
Pike added that Fairways Golf Course general manager and PGA professional Kris Kallem has been giving the team some lessons.
Koohns, Klauss, Baycroft, Rowe, Kendall Weller and Elijah Palmer will play in the first Great Northern League match at Clarkston, March 22.
Hill, Roman Scissons, Jack Kallem, Scott Nadeau, Austin Hughes and Gabe Sindlinger will play in the Medical Lake Invite at the Fairways on the same day.
“We’re pretty excited,” Pike said. “They’re all good kids and I’m excited for them to learn about playing golf.”
