Two new housing subdivisions will move forward in Medical Lake. The City Council approved a preliminary plat for Fox Ridge South while the Planning Commission authorized final approval of Silver Hills West.

The Cheney Parks and Recreation Department unveiled four different plans for the proposed 50-acre park along Betz Road.

Medical Lake’s 52-46 upset victory over Lakeside, led by the 17-point, 11-rebound double-double from Richelle Daily, propelled the Cardinals into the District 7 title game versus Pullman.

March 1, 1996

The need for a new Cheney police station topped the list of to-do items from the Capital Facilities Committee.

Plans for a proposed bike trail using a former railroad roadbed that ran through Cheney was the subject of a recent meeting involving city and state officials.

Following a 52-40 tournament victory over East Valley, the Cheney girl’s basketball team found itself just a game away from returning to the state tournament. Anna Getz led the Lady Hawks with 18 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

March 6, 1986

Sarah Weddington, a former official with the administration of President Jimmy Carter told an audience at Eastern Washington University that “A woman could easily emerge from the Republican Party in 1988 as a candidate for president. Among the names mentions were Secretary of Transportation Elizabeth Dole or United Nations representative Jeane Kirkpatrick.

Demolition began on the historic Cheney United Methodist Church that had served the community for 99 years.

Both Cheney boy’s and girls basketball teams fought their way out of the loser’s bracket of the Frontier League tournament to earn berths in regional competition at Central Washington University.

March 2, 1976

Construction had begun on downtown streets where new sewer lines were being installed and sidewalks and curbs replaced.

An estimated 250 Cheneyites turned out to watch Mayor Gerald Blakely cut the ribbon and officially open the new Ranch Thrift and Ben Franklin stores at the site of the city’s first shopping center.

The battle for a berth in the NAIA national basketball tournament in Kansas City came down to a third game in the best-of-three series between EWU and Central Washington with the Wildcats winning in Cheney 51-49 when Ron Cox’s apparent game-tying basket at the buzzer was disallowed.

March 2, 1966

The Cheney Lions Club held an auction that netted the club coffers $67 in the event held in conjunction with the group’s oyster feed.

The Cheney School Board approved the appointment of Don Monson as high school vice principal.

The Cheney Blackhawks’ boys basketball team completed its league play with a perfect 15-0 record, and were 18-3 heading into the state tournament in Tacoma at Pacific Lutheran University. Bob Bartlett averaged 16.1 points per game to lead Cheney.
