McBroom earns Big Sky, national player of the week honors

Piling up the most points in back-to-back games in Big Sky Conference play in school history, senior graduate transfer Austin McBroom was selected Feb. 15 as the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week.

The league’s leading scorer finished with a combined 72 points in EWU’s home sweep to extend the Eagles’ winning streak to six games. Including his 11 assists which led to 26 additional Eagle points, he had a hand in 98 of EWU’s 192 points on the weekend.

The 6-foot-1 transfer from Saint Louis University finished with a career-high 37 in a 97-80 win over Northern Colorado Feb. 13. He made 10-of-16 shots from the field, 7-of-12 from the 3-point stripe and 10-of-11 from the free throw line to finish with his second-straight game of 35+ points. He scored 35 Feb. 11 in a 95-85 victory over North Dakota.

McBroom was later selected by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association as its Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Feb. 14.

Hawes earns hockey award

Eastern Washington University junior Tanner Hawes was named Defenseman of the Month for January by the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League.

Hawes broke out in a big way offensively to begin 2016. After picking up just three points in 10 games to begin the season, the third-year blueliner hit the scoreboard in all seven January contests. He tallied two goals and nine assists, highlighted by three multi-point games against league leaders Simon Fraser University. His 11 points during the month eclipsed his season totals from his first two BCIHL campaigns.

Hawes, from Snohomish, Wash., will be in action this Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20 in a pair of games at the University Recreation Center versus Trinity Western. Puck drops at 7 p.m. each night. Saturday is Senior Night.
