Proponents of a proposed recreation center at Eastern Washington University was seeking approval of a street vacation for North 10th Street from Elm to Cedar.

A grain bin in downtown Cheney collapsed, spilling 65,000 bushels of grain on the ground adjacent to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks.

It had been 15 years since Medical Lake hosted a girls basketball playoff game but they did not forget how to perform as the Cardinals scored a 48-42 victory over Riverside to advance to regional play. Richelle Daily scored 21 points to lead ML.

Feb. 22, 1996

Cheney School District students did as well or better than their statewide counterparts in standardized testing results of the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills released by the district.

A Seattle-based foundation that administers the trust funds of the estate of former Cheney Mayor and Washington state Gov. Clarence D. Martin announced it had awarded Turnbull Wildlife Refuge $50,000 for education programs.

The Cheney girls basketball team was taking an 11-1 Frontier League record and a mark of 17-3 overall into the league tournament being staged at EWU.

Feb. 27, 1986

A proposal by EWU to beam educational programs to rural school districts across the state received an initial show of support from the Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Al Beckwith was defeated during the fall elections but was the choice of the Cheney City Council to fill the seat vacated by Fred Johns who was recently selected as mayor.

The Cheney boys basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Frontier League basketball tournament with a 58-44 win over Deer Park in which Dan Jarms scored 15 points.

Feb. 26, 1976

In a surprise move, the Eastern Washington State College Board of Trustees immediately terminated the contract of President Emerson Shuck who had planned to retire following the conclusion of fall quarter.

Mario Honore of the Washington State Human Rights Commission told the Cheney Chamber of Commerce that while there was a backlog of nearly 300 cases, only 30 percent were discrimination-related.

The EWSC men’s basketball team’s 20-5 record earned them an NAIA district playoff berth and a best-of-three playoff against Central Washington for the right to advance to the national tournament in Kansas City.

Feb. 25, 1966

The Cheney City Council approved a land use permit for a concrete mixing plant on the site of the new Cheney High School that would supply construction crews on the project.

The Cheney boys basketball team needed just one more win in a tournament being played at Central Valley High School to reach the state championships.
