Nadeau, Babcock win district swim titles

The Cheney High boys swim team earned a lot of success at the 1A-2A districts championships in Moses Lake, Feb. 4-6. The top three finishers in each event advanced to the WIAA State Swim Championships at the King County Aquatics Center, in Federal Way., Feb. 19-20.

Scott Nadeau captured his fourth district title in the 200-yard individual medley after he finished the event in 2 minutes and 7.05 seconds. Arseniy Tepp took eighth in the event in 2:39.83. Nadeau also won the 100 butterfly (57.35) and was voted "Swimmer of the Year" by District 2 coaches. Ethan Sugimura took sixth (1:04.00) in the event.

Trevor Babcock won his first district title in the 200 freestyle in (1:59.00). C.J. Kriger, who swims for Medical Lake and practices with the Cheney team, took seventh (2:03.81) in the event. Babcock placed second in the 100 freestyle (1:49.58).

Other top finishers include Kriger taking fifth in the 50 freestyle (24.77), Eric Foien placing eighth in the 500 freestyle (6:21.94) and Sugimura coming in eighth in the 100 backstroke (1:06.72).

In team events, Nadeau, Babcock, Sugimura and Zach Jongeward took third in both the 200 medley relay (1:53.13) and 200 freestyle relay (1:41.00). Tepp, Cole Ross, Spencer Hagel and Noah Solis finished fourth in the 400 freestyle relay.

The Blackhawks finished third out of 13 teams with 324 points. Medical Lake took fifth with 111 points.

"They did awesome," head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said. "They had huge time drops and swam really fast. We had a couple of rough swims and disqualifications, but the kids pulled through. They've done a great job from where they've been in the season."

Hochwalt said Nadeau and Babcock will take a couple of days rest, then work on speed.

"The relay swimmers will work on starts and turns to make sure we're ready to swim fast for state," she added.
