Eagle women back at Reese Court for rematches with NAU, Southern Utah

With half of its league games in the rear view mirror, the Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team returns to Reese Court for rematches against Big Sky Conference foes Northern Arizona and Southern Utah this week.

Eastern (14-7, 8-1 Big Sky) will take on Northern Arizona tonight (Feb. 4)at 6 p.m., and Southern Utah on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 2 p.m.

Last week, the Eagles lost their first conference game of the season, falling at Portland State, 79-81, Jan. 28. On Saturday, Jan. 30, the Eagles had their best offensive showing of the year in a 100-83 victory over Sacramento State. After last week’s games, Eastern remains tied for first place in the Big Sky standings with Montana State.

The offense struggled against PSU, shooting 37 percent from the field, while allowing the Vikings to shoot at a 41.8 percent clip. Despite the offensive woes, senior Hayley Hodgins scored a team-high 33 points on 11-of-27 shooting.

EWU bounced back with a dominant offensive showing at Sacramento State, scoring 100 points in a game for the first time this season, while shooting 56.2 percent from the field and 52.9 percent from three point range. Five Eagles scored in double digits, with junior Ashli Payne leading the team with a career high 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting. Eastern’s defense held the quick shooting, CSUS team to only 11 made threes on 41 attempts. Overall, the Hornets shot 37.8 percent from the field.
