With an enrollment decline of 90 students, the Cheney School District was facing a loss of $235,000 in its budget and cuts in service.
A recent surprising winter storm dumped seven inches of snow on Cheney and forced the cancellation or postponement of numerous events.

Cheney voters narrowly passed a $998,000 school district maintenance and operations levy Feb. 3, gaining the necessary 60 percent majority by just 87 votes in a 1,128 – 607 decision.
Funeral services were planned for longtime community resident and former superintendent of Cheney Schools, Albert Hinckley who passed away at age 83. Hinckley was credited with expanding the district by taking over operation of a variety of several outlying schools.
Emerson Gordon's last-second lay-in basket helped his Eastern Washington State College Savages earn a 74-72 triple-overtime Evergreen Conference men's basketball victory over Central Washington at the Pavilion.

The value of building permits in Cheney reached nearly $3 million with $544,000 in private building projects and another $2.4 million from spending at Eastern Washington State College.
Cheney defeated Selkirk in a Northeast A League wrestling match that allowed the Blackhawks to finish a perfect 9-0 and clinch the regular season title.
