Cheney gymnastics second at meet

The Cheney High gymnastics team started 2016 on a good note with a second-place finish, scoring 124.825 points, at a Jan. 6 Greater Spokane League meet. Central Valley won the meet with 160.3 points.

In all-around scoring Alexis Miller finished sixth overall with 28.175 points while Olivia Hovwater (28.125) was seventh and Makayla Miller (27.225) was 10th.

“Some of the girls made huge strides in their routines,” head coach Jaelyn Miller said. “Every meet we are making improvements. Hopefully we can fine tune our routines in time for regional and state competition.”

Gardner added that the winter break allowed the team to focus on conditioning, skills and drills.

In individual events, Alexis Miller finished fourth in the uneven bars (7.325), fifth in the vault (7.750) and eighth in the balance beam (7.450). Hovwater was fifth in the floor exercise (7.475) and sixth in the bars (6.400).

Mikayla Miller was eighth in the bars (6.350) and 10th in the vault (7.350). She and Hovater tied for 10th in the vault (7.350).

Cheney returned to Mead, Jan. 13, and competed in a GSL meet against Rogers (host), Lewis and Clark, Ferris and Mt. Spokane.

“It will be business as usual,” Gardner said. “Now that we’ve had a few meets, we’re trying to tune into what the judges are looking for and how they score and using that when we are working on our routines.”
