Medical Lake wrestlers Reed, Thomas win

Medical Lake got wins it might have expected during a string of holiday wrestling tournaments with senior Nick Reed.

But when freshman Weston Thomas picked up a pair of victories it proved to be an unexpected surprise for new head coach Josh Edmondson.

Holidays were busy time as Cardinals wrestled at the Tri-County Tournament at Central Valley (Dec. 22), Rogers M2 (Dec. 30) and just returned from the Clearwater Classic in Lewiston, Idaho and Reed claimed wins at 113-pounds in all three outings. Triston Keith, a senior, was fourth at 152 pounds in the Clearwater. Complete statistics were not available from the tournaments.

“It was really neat to have those guys in there winning,” Edmondson said.

“The rest of the guys wrestled hard but just came up a little short,” he added. “We had a good team bonding experience traveling and stayed two nights.”

Thomas, competing at 106-pounds, has gotten the attention of his coach.

“When you have freshmen step up and do that — this is the second tournament he’s won — he won at Rogers as well,” Edmondson said. Thomas was third at CV.

Thomas has wrestling experience at the middle school level, but to compete as he has at the high school level, and do so in a such a short time period is extra impressive. “Thomas’s win is exciting for the future of the program, Edmondson said.

“He’s really making a name for himself this year,” he said of Thomas. “To step in as a freshman in a senior and junior dominated sport it’s tough.”

Medical Lake, 0-1 in Northeast A League competition moves back into league meets with a huge outing tonight (Thurs., Jan. 7) hosting traditional power, Deer Park at 7 p.m.

“That will be a real test of where we’re at,” Edmondson said. “We’re missing a few weight classes but we’ve shown up every match.”
