Cheney Mayor Allan Gainer was sworn into office by the city’s director of finance, Cindy Niemeier.

Following a year of wetlands mitigation to satisfy requirements for a building permit from the Washington Department of Ecology, Tomlinson-Black announced they would break ground soon on the Silver Hills West development.

Medical Lake won in 10 of 14 weight classes en route to its sixth consecutive M2 Mallet wrestling tournament title at Rogers High School. Cardinal winners included 275-pound Andy Sammons.

Jan. 4, 1996

Cheney police were kept busy dealing with car theft and an armed robbery of an individual when a drug deal went wrong.

Two street construction projects on Second and Fourth streets would see new sidewalks, pavement and sewer lines at a cost of over $432,000.

Tom Jud, wrestling in the 215-pound division, earned an individual championship and helped Cheney earn a fourth place finish in the Tournament of Champions at Mead High School.

Jan. 9, 1986

Final figures were not in but state-funded enrollment at Eastern Washington University declined by nearly 400 to 6,900 students in the winter quarter. Fall enrollment sat at 7,229.

An EWU van unloading football equipment from a charter airliner that transported the school’s football team to a playoff game at Northern Iowa University caused $10,000 in damage in a collision with an Ozark Airlines DC-9.

Brent Wooten, a former EWU head football coach and current recreation professor, announced he was taking a six-month leave of absence to coach an Italian professional team, the Grosetto Condors in a town two hours north of Rome.

Jan. 8, 1976

The “Magic Bus” which services EWU students with transportation to and from Spokane, announced a reduction in fares from 50 to 40 cents in hopes of increasing declining ridership. EWU subsidized the run with a $17,000 yearly contribution.

The Cheney Police Department announced that 1975 crime statistics defied national trends with a 21-percent decline while across the country the number rose 11 percent.

50 Years Ago

Jan. 7, 1966

Cheney residents were saddened by the sudden passing of Mayor Nolan Brown.

Bids in the neighborhood of $1 million were scheduled to be opened by contractors interested in building the new Cheney High School on Jan. 18.
