Eastern men roll over University of Denver

The Eastern Washington men’s basketball team will use an important road victory over the University of Denver Pioneers Dec. 20 to hopefully propel them into the Big Sky Conference season, which also starts away from home.

Behind a trio of big offensive performances, the Eagles collected a 74-58 nonconference victory over the Pioneers at Magness Arena in Denver, Colo. beating a team that had three wins over Big Sky teams in their 8-4 record. Earlier, Denver defeated Northern Colorado, Weber State and Idaho State.

Felix Von Hofe scored 28 points, surpassing an earlier career high. Venky Jois had 26 points and 16 rebounds — his second double-double in the last four games – and senior transfer Austin McBroom added 18 points at the Eagles evened their preseason record at 6-6.

Eastern trailed early 16-11, but Von Hofe scored 16 of his points in a 19-7 run in the first half to give the Eagles the lead for good at 30-23. Eastern held Denver to 40 percent shooting and had a 40-21 edge in rebounding.

The Eagles head into Big Sky Conference play starting Dec. 31 at Greeley, against Northern Colorado with the road trip continuing Jan. 2 at North Dakota.
