Following a public hearing, the Medical Lake Planning Commission approved Studio Cascade's plan to subdivide 11 acres of land along State Route 902 to build 38 homes in the Fox Ridge South development.

Grant Murie, who for the past 25 years served as Cheney's finance director, retired from service that began in 1981.

Three players, led by Richelle Daily with 18 points, scored in double figures as the Medical Lake girl's basketball team defeated Priest River 59-53 to remain undefeated at 5-0. Caitlin Smith had 15 while Colleen Constantine added 11 for the Cardinals.

Dec. 28, 1995

Spokane County announced that West Plains' parks and pools would be on their own for funding to operate. Cheney's share of the money was estimated at $14,000.

Among the items the Cheney City Council covered in their year-end meeting was presentation of a key to the city and a resolution honoring employee Ted Ham who was retiring after 42 years of service.

Jan. 2, 1986

Cheney Mayor and Eastern Washington University economics professor, Tom Trulove was expected to receive an appointment from Washington Gov. Booth Gardner for a seat on the Northwest Power Planning Council.

Cheney residents were being urged to watch how they use their electricity in hopes that saving energy might reward them with lower rates in the future.

Medical Lake head football coach John Giannandrea, who led his team to a Northeast A League regular season championship and a berth in the playoffs, was named coach of the year in the league.

Jan. 1, 1976

The on-again, off-again battle between the Cheney Care Center and the state Department of Social and Health Services was on again as the agency sought to decertify the facility as a Medicaid provider.

The Cheney City Council approved the 1976 operating budget but lost a battle to retain a parking control officer in favor of hiring a new police officer.

Both local teams claimed victories in the first annual Eastern Washington State College Classic basketball tournament as Cheney High School defeated Brewster and EWSC topped Central Washington. No scores were reported in either title game.

50 Years Ago

Dec. 31, 1965

The Cheney School Board was in discussion over games played in school carnivals with concerns voiced about some contests being seen as lotteries.

EWSC students, of which over 2,400 had already registered, would return to campus Jan. 2 for the winter quarter with another 1,000 expected to enroll.

The EWSC Savages were preparing to defend the title they won at a basketball tournament in Nampa, Idaho featuring teams from Northwest Nazarene, Western Montana and Carroll College.
