The Cheney High boys swim team started the season with a loss to Selah, 108-61, Dec. 10.
Despite the loss there were still many positives from the meet, including Scott Nadeau qualifying for state in the 200-yard individual medley, which he won in 2 minutes and 10.85 seconds. He also qualified for state in the 100 butterfly after winning the race in 57.46.
“This meet was interesting,” head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said. “There were a lot of kids who were faster this year than they were last year at this time.”
Trevor Babcock won both the 200 freestyle (1:53.94) and the 500 freestyle (5:18.19).
Other top Cheney finishers include Ethan Sugimura, who took third in the 100 freestyle (1:01.32) and the 100 breaststroke (1:15.68). Jacob Devine finished third in the 100 backstroke (1:16.59).
In team events, Nadeau, Babcock, Sugimura and Arseniy Tepp won the 400 freestyle relay (3:46.42) and were second in the 200 medley relay (1:55.36).
The Blackhawks had their first home meet, Dec. 15, against Prosser and Grandview.
Hochwalt said the team will work on building their endurance and that she’d have kids try other events at the Prosser/Grandview meet to help “find their niches.”
“We’re still catching up to speed,” Hochwalt said. “We had some kids join the team after the season started. We’re hoping to make up the difference during Christmas break.
