Cardinal girls prevail over Liberty

The Medical Lake girl’s basketball team got balanced scoring from senior Bradyn Wegner and sophomore Makayla Geiger and won their opening game of the season in a 54-43 nonleague victory over Liberty, Dec. 5.

“Anytime you get a win it’s a good thing, especially first game of the year, it builds confidence,” head coach Kyle Lundberg said.

The Cardinals started slow, getting outscored 11-5 in the opening quarter but got the offense in gear the final three quarters.

“We had some butterflies, five of the eight girls that played experienced their first varsity game that night,” Lundberg said. “We settled down after the first quarter and got back in the groove.”

With a 21-point second quarter Medical Lake was tied at 26 at the half but won the battles in the second half.

Wegner had a pair of 3-point shots among her 13 points while Geiger’s totals included six field goals.

“Bradyn and Mak played well,” Lundberg said. “They took what the defense gave them and executed well.”

Michaela Peterson and Hailey Hostetter each added eight points for Medical Lake while Ashlyn Tamietti and Makayla Tamietti each had six.

A victory might have been enough of a takeaway for Lundberg, but he found other things with which to be pleased.

“How well we played as a team and pushed the ball up the floor,” was one result Lundberg said. “We played very fast, this is a fun team to watch.”

On the flip side, “We had some defense lapses that we will work on and continue to get better,” Lundberg said.

After the 2B Lancers took a 27-26 lead early in the third quarter the Cardinals went on a 10-2 run to lead 36-29.Liberty closed again to within 38-37 before Medical Lake made a 6-0 run at the end of the quarter to pretty much seal it.

Medical Lake had just one other nonleague game against Lind-Ritzville-Sprague this past Tuesday before jumping right into Northeast A League play Friday at home versus Freeman at 7:30 p.m. They travel to Northwest Christian on Dec. 16 and return to the NEA to play Deer Park Dec. 18 before taking Christmas break.
