Schuller collects 200th victory

The Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team exploded for 25 first-quarter points and never looked back, using stifling defense to defeat visiting Air Force, 65-44, Nov. 15 at Reese Court. This victory marked the 200th career win for head coach Wendy Schuller.

The Eagles opened their regular season with a 64-40 victory over visiting Eastern Oregon Friday afternoon, Nov. 13.

Against the Falcons, senior Hayley Hodgins led the Eagles with 20 points, her second straight game of at least 20 or more. She shot 8 of 14 from the field, and made two 3-pointers. Her sister, sophomore Delaney Hodgins, scored all 14 of her points in the opening 20 minutes.

Defense was a bright spot in the game as Eastern forced 25 turnovers, including 12 steals and had eight blocks while never giving up a lead.

“Our goal is to make teams uncomfortable running their own offense, and I think our team did a pretty good job of that today,” Schuller said.

In the opener, Hayley Hodgins led the team with 24 points on 10 of 22 shooting. She added four 3-pointers. Delaney Hodgins ended with 13 points.

The Eagles got off to a fast start, opening up a 21-8 advantage before leading at the half by 10.

With the wins Eastern improved to 2-0 with the win and were to play at Gonzaga, Thursday, Nov. 19 and are home Sunday, Nov. 22 at 1 p.m. versus Cal State Northridge.
