County urges residents to shelter in place

Because of severe wind conditions that have escalated to a dangerous level, the Greater Spokane Department of Emergency Management is advising citizens to shelter in place. Only call 911 in the case of life threatening emergency.

In a news release issued at 4:32 p.m., the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that extreme winds have resulted in downed trees, power lines, and flying debris. Conditions are expected to last until approximately 7 p.m.

The public is advised to find a substantial building and shelter in place for safety. Stay away from exterior walls or windows. Only call 911 in the case of a life-threatening emergency.

According to official communications, power lines are down around the West Plains including in Medical Lake. Numerous trees have been uprooted in Cheney, and a small but fast moving brush fire was reported at State Route 902 and Craig Road earlier this afternoon.

First responder and power company crews are onsite in most cases.
