The Medical Lake girl’s soccer season ended on a positive note with a 2-1 nonleague shootout win for the Cardinals over St. Georges (7-5) last Thursday, Oct. 29.
Earlier in the week the Cardinals dropped their final Northeast A League contest 5-1 to Riverside to finish 3-11 in league play and 3-13 overall.
As she has all season, Makayla Geiger scored the Medical Lake goal to tie the contest versus the Dragons in the 68th minute, sending the match into a scoreless overtime and finally a shootout.
Then it was up to Geiger, Nicole Wetherall, Jessica Laird and Jaxyn Farmen who provided the shootout scoring — and goalkeeping — in a 4-3 edge.
As she had earlier in a Medical Lake win against Colville, Wetherall also stepped into the net. “Nicole reads it so well,” Higgins said.
Against Newport (9-4 NEA, 10-5 overall) on Senior Day, Geiger contributed as she has all season, scoring the Card’s lone goal, the first of the match at the 10-minute mark. But with a pair of goals from Katie Belauro, the Rams scored the match’s final goals.
With the season-concluding match, head coach Zane Higgins, turns his attention to next season where his struggling young team is bright with promise he said.
“We were a team of freshmen and sophomores which is encouraging,” Higgins said. “There are some very good players coming up.”
Another area that will be solidified will be in goal. “The goaltending situation at the beginning of the year, that was real iffy,” Higgins said. But he found his keeper for the future in Taylor Cannon.
