Support Cheney Outreach

Letters to the Editor

The Cheney Outreach Center opened its doors Feb. 1, 1990 to begin providing basic emergency assistance for the low-income residents of Cheney and the surrounding area.  Residential boundaries extend to North of the 1-90 freeway; south of Hallett Road on the North; Sherman Road on the East and the Whitman County line on the south.

The population served includes families, individuals, elderly, ill, disabled and/or homeless. Assistance includes help with utility bills, limited rent assistance, vouchers for food/household/personal needs, limited medical prescriptions, transportation (bus passes, two-hour bus passes and gas for vehicles if funds are available), food bank referrals and recreation activities and school supplies for children. Income and residential guidelines do apply.

All assistance depends on available funds. Information and referral is provided for the Cheney community regardless of income and residence.

Hours of operation are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9–11:30 a.m. and Thursdays from 9–11:30 a.m. by telephone only. The telephone numbaer is (509) 235-8900, and fax is (509) 235-8899. The office is located at 616 Third St. in the Wren Pierson Community Center, and staffed by dedicated Cheney volunteers.

The Cheney Outreach Center is supported by many Cheney churches and depends on grants from organizations, businesses and private donors. An easy way to give financial support to this efficiently run organization is to add a donation to your city of Cheney utility bill payment under “Project Outreach.”
