Amy Jo Sooy, seeking a third term as Cheney’s mayor, was set to face off against Allan Gainer in the upcoming general election.

After the position was eliminated with the passage of Initiative 695 in 2000, the Medical Lake City Council authorized use of City Assistance Program funding to pay for reinstating a seventh police officer.

Cheney kept its playoff hopes alive following a 21-13 Greater Spokane League victory over Shadle Park as Mike Kinnie, Donnie McKee and Jesus Fregoso scored for the Blackhawks.

Oct. 26, 1995

Cheney Superintendent of Schools Phil Snowden announced the intention to possibly reinstitute a boundary review in light of a report that nearly 600 miscellaneous housing units were in some form of planning or development within the school district.

Emil Kraft, a current Eastern Washington University student and 1992 graduate of Cheney High School, recently received the highest score of over 2,200 undergraduates in 27 nations on an international actuarial examination.

The Cheney Blackhawks improved to a perfect 5-0 in Frontier League play and 7-0 overall with a 22-6 victory over the Riverside Rams. Earon Davis, Chad Randall and Abdul Odood scored touchdowns for the Blackhawks.

Oct. 31, 1985

The Cheney Planning Commission was working on a new zoning ordinance that would limit the number of unrelated persons who can live in the same house.

Group Health Cooperative held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Cheney Health Care Center.

Jason Kent caught a pair of touchdown passes to lead the sixth-ranked Cheney Blackhawks to a 42-17 win over Deer Park.

Oct. 30, 1975

Local residents were facing a general election that would decide City Council positions. Included were races featuring incumbent Tom Showalter versus Dwayne Paul, incumbent Ray Hammel against Harold Edgett, incumbent William Wynd and Jack Crabb as well as incumbent Fred Johns and Alan Beckwith.

Safety concerns over dangerous intersections, and the need to have crossing guards present, were voiced by members of the Cheney School District’s advisory group study committee. Sixth and Oakland, Seventh and Washington as well as Second and Bonnie Way were the problem areas.

Cheney quarterback Kelly Williams connected on 11 of 14 second-half passes and 134 yards, scored twice himself and also threw three touchdown passes as the Blackhawks defeated Medical Lake 33-16 in the Cardinals’ Homecoming game.

Oct. 29, 1965

Eastern Days queen Cammy Sparks won her title in part because of a speech which urged a closer relationship between the city of Cheney and the college.

Several Cheney residents were urging that children in the city observe Halloween on Saturday, Oct. 30 rather than Sunday, Oct. 31 to avoid being out late on a school night.

Cheney and Mead played to a 0-0 tie in a Northeast A League football games prompting coach Jim Hatch to say, “They overlooked Mead, they weren’t ready because they were looking ahead to Medical Lake.”
