The collapse of a box culvert along a stretch of the Cheney-Spokane Road between Gardner and Sherman roads has weakened asphalt in the area and created a traffic alert.
Spokane County Road Department officials originally decided to close the road and detour traffic around the collapse. After further inspection, county engineers have elected not to detour traffic, but instead route motorists around the breach by using traffic cones, barricades and reduced speed.
The weakened portion of the roadway is in the center of the road, and traffic will be routed around using the shoulders....
