Jett named ML SCOPE volunteer of the year

Officials at Espanola-Medical Lake SCOPE (Sheriff's Community Oriented Policing Effort) have named community resident Hilda Jett as the Medical Lake SCOPE's 2015 Volunteer of the Year.

In a Sept. 24 interview, Jett said she was "really quite surprised" to be receiving the award. A resident of Medical Lake for over 50 years, Jett has been serving with SCOPE for the last three and a half years, as well as being a Block Watch captain on her block on Jefferson Street for about the same length of time.

Jett said she has done about everything there is to do in the organization. She has served as a traffic flagger at events such as Fools Run at Midnight, the Kiwanis Triathlon, the Troika Half Iron Man competition, the Wonder Woman Run and the Blue Waters, Bluegrass Festival.

Jett has helped run the organization's Founder's Day booth, assisted at the Parent's Night Out event at Medical Lake High School and SCOPE's annual Christmas party for kids as well as taking part in safety patrols at Halloween. She's also helped out with other SCOPE activities such as fingerprinting and disseminating information, serving at the organization's downtown Medical Lake substation in City Hall two out of the three days it is open each week.

"I like to do it all," Jett said. "Whatever is needed, I help in that."

Jett will receive her award along with other SCOPE volunteers at the annual Spokane County Sheriff's Office banquet Oct. 7 at Mirabeau Point in Spokane Valley.

The Espanola-Medical Lake SCOPE office is open Tuesdays – Thursdays, and can be contacted by phone at 299-7525. The organization meets the fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the SCOPE offices.
