Cheney swimming earns more state qualifiers

The Cheney High girls swim team picked up a couple more state-qualifying times in their 103-60 loss to Ellensburg, Sept. 19.

Makenzie Norman qualified for her third state event after taking first in the 200-yard freestyle race in 2 minutes and 4.35 seconds. She also finished first in the 100 freestyle in 57.55 seconds.

Alexis Schmidt qualified for the 200 individual medley after she finished second in 2:23.82. Schmidt also took first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.48.

Other top finishers for Cheney include Evarosa Perry, who finished third in both the 200 IM in 2:52.48. and the 500 freestyle in 6:55.84 and Courtney Hanson, who was second in the 50 freestyle in 30.37

“It was a good first meet, we were missing a few key players but the kids who competed swam well,” head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said.

The Blackhawks 400 freestyle relay, consisting of Norman, Perry, Schmidt and Melissa Johnson, took first in 4:25.70.

Cheney hosts Clarkston, Oct. 1, at the Eastern Washington University pool in its first home meet of the season. Last year, the Blackhawks defeated Clarkston, 85-64. Hochwalt said the short break gives the team time to put in some hard work.
