Cheney Police tie suspect

to additional break-ins

The Cheney Police Department has tied an alleged member of a Cheney-Spokane burglary ring to two more break-ins in Cheney’s Salnave area.

Matthew J. Horpel, 28, was arrested Aug. 12 in conjunction with burglaries of residences on Dubois Street and Clover Court. Horpel was working with four other individuals, two males and two females who were subsequently arrested by Spokane police on burglary charges.

Cheney Police Sgt. Rick Beghtol said Monday that fingerprints taken from items found at residential burglaries on Cheney’s Gary and Chestnut streets match Horpel’s, linking him to those break ins. Horpel is now facing a total of 11 felony charges in Cheney and Spokane ranging from burglary to trafficking in stolen property.

Phishing email scam using Better Business Bureau name

Spokane’s Better Business Bureau chapter is warning business owners and consumers not to open bogus emails that began arriving in email boxes Sept. 10.

The emails are disguised to look like BBB correspondence and ask people to open an attached Standard Business Questionnaire (SBQ), a form that BBB uses to gather information from businesses to create or update BBB Business Reviews. Instead, the attachment delivers malware to the user’s computer.

There are three ways to recognize these scam emails: The “From” line is “BBB Accreditation Services , the “Subject” line references “BBB SBQ Form” along with random reference numbers, and the malicious attachment is labeled “BBB SBQ Form.zip.”

BBB is asking anyone receiving fraudulent emails to forward it to [email protected].
