Cheney's first community-wide yard sale this weekend

Maria Fell has visited community-wide yard sales in Reardan and Spokane’s Hillyard area and asked the question, as have her friends, why not Cheney?

That will change this weekend as Fell has worked to coordinate the first Cheney Yard Sale, which runs Sept. 18 – 20. As of Sept. 14, Monday, 21 residences have notified Fell they are holding yard sales, 15 in Cheney and six outside the city limits.

Fell has compiled the locations she has so far into a map and list, which can be found on a Facebook page she has created for the event. Several locations have listed item types that will be available — with Fell creating a map legend containing icons denoting the types — that range from clothes to infant and kids items to furniture and household wares.

Fell said Cheney Trading Company has agreed to provide the use of their parking lot for people who live just outside of town as a place they can set up and sell their goods. Individuals wishing to hold a yard sale here are responsible for bringing their own equipment as well as setting up, tearing down and clean up.

Fell said the map does not include all area residences holding yard sales as some people contacted her after the deadline. Map copies will also be available at CTC and Cheney’s Holiday Inn Express.

All of the sales are independent events, with no centralized budget and any proceeds going to the residents for their use.

“There are no rules,” Fell said. “Whatever anybody wants to do, they can do.”

Fell said she is not holding a yard sale, but merely acting as coordinator for others. She hopes the citywide sale will become an annual event, and lead to a spirit of community she experienced while attending a similar sale last year about this time in Reardan.

“That was awesome!” she said. “I wanted to do it here (Cheney) as well.”
