Eagles defeat Idaho with quick strikes

The Eastern Washington University soccer team won its third match of the season in a non-conference match against the University of Idaho, Sept. 7. Goals by sophomores Chloe Williams and Delaney Romero just a minute apart put the Eagles up 2-0 in the first half. The Vandals would score later in the second half.

The Eagles improve their record to 3-1-1 while Idaho drops to 2-3.

After William’s goal in the 23rd minute, Romero received a through ball from Williams to put her past Idaho’s defensive line. Facing one-on-one with the visitors keeper, Romero shot the ball into the upper left corner.

“I thought we played the second part of the first half really well,” EWU head coach Chad Bodnar said.

The Eagles head for Indiana for their next game, facing Valparaiso, Sept. 11 in the start of a Midwest road trip that also includes trips to Wisconsin-Green Bay, Sept. 13 and the University of Illinois-Chicago, Sept. 16.

Outrigger Challenge

Coming off a perfect 4-0 weekend in the state of Louisiana, the Eastern Washington University volleyball team will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii, for this week’s Outrigger Resorts Volleyball Challenge.

Eastern (4-3) had a stellar showing this past weekend, sweeping Providence, LaSalle and New Orleans to win the New Orleans Invitational title before topping Southeastern Louisiana in four sets.

EWU hit .398 over its three matches at the New Orleans Invitational, highlighted by a .459 clip against Providence last Friday, Sept. 4.

Senior Alexis Wesley and freshman Jessica Gilbert were both named to the All-Tournament Team after impressive individual showings. Wesley averaged 2.33 kills per set while hitting at a .576 clip to go along with nine total blocks while Gilbert averaged 2.11 kills per set and swung at a .500 clip.

Head coach Wade Benson reached an important milestone this past weekend, winning his 250th career game after the Eagles topped Providence. He is now 253-139 in 13 years as a head coach, including a 168-76 record in nine seasons at EWU.

In Hawaii, the Eagles will face some of the toughest squads in the country, including No. 2 Florida and the 16th-ranked Rainbow Wahine.
