The water tower in Sunset Park in Airway Heights is getting a makeover sometime in the next year.
In August, City Council approved a work order for Century West to prepare the contract for the bid to repaint the tower. Interim Public Works Director Ross Dunfee explained that water tanks have to be recoated after a certain amount of time.
“Depending on its thickness, the protective coating should last 10-20 years,” Dunfee said.
Although Dunfee offered council a chance to change the colors, he said the water tower will keep its green and white colors. The Sunset Falcons logo, which references Sunset Elementary, will also remain on the water tower.
“That can change in the future but right now the colors will remain the same,” Dunfee said.
Dunfee said once the bid is awarded, the project will be held off for the winter and painting will start in the spring. He added that the project’s completion and price depends on the contractor.
“The contractor brings in three crews and completes the project quickly, or stretches it out,” Dunfee said.
Dunfee added that there is no other maintenance scheduled for the water tower. Public works will work with the Utilities Department to move equipment before the painting begins.
“If the equipment is not moved, it will get a fresh coat of paint,” Dunfee said.
